Overview
Children who have been legitimately baptized, and have undergone a recognized programme of preparation leading to confirmation and 'first communion' in the Catholic Church, have already met the formal requirements for entering into full communion with the Church. The advice below is for adults and young people who have not taken this path.
The first step in the process is to speak to one of the priests after Mass or other services. Or if you prefer, use the contact form.
The process thereafter varies to some extent, depending on circumstances. At any age, being received into the Catholic Church is a profound and joyous occasion, both for the new Catholic and for existing members of the parish community. In almost all cases, a period of preparation is required, after which a person will be brought into full communion with the Church by making a solemn profession of faith, followed by receipt of baptism (if they haven't already been legitimately baptized), confirmation and the Eucharist. Reaching this stage is not the end of the journey; being a Catholic is a wonderful grace, and anyone who actively embraces this state of being will enter a period of spiritual growth that lasts for the rest of their lifetime.
Formal Rite of Initiation
Adults and young people who wish to be received into the Catholic Church will normally begin a formal programme of preparation, known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The programme structure varies depending on age, ability and, most substantially, whether or not the person is already a practicing Christian of another denomination. The whole process typically takes a year, depending on circumstances. The only cost is your commitment; there is no financial implication.
If you like to research, pre-read and investigate before diving in, why not start by touring the RCIA website, where there is plenty of advice for enquirers.
