The meaning of the word liturgy can be traced back to the Greek: work of the people. It refers to the public worship of God, the daily services in the church. The liturgy is the visible face of the church, a gateway through which people are absorbed into the life of the church and develop their relationship with God.
The pinnacle of the life of the Church is the celebration of Mass - the service that culminates in the celebration of the Eucharist (see the Sacraments page). But there are other liturgical celebrations, for example, the Liturgy of the Hours (daily prayer - Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, Compline) and the celebration of the sacraments,
The Liturgy of the Catholic Church is something sacred, which has evolved over the years since the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, and which continues to evolve. Although most of the services in the parish are in English, we do not create stylized variations on the Liturgy, or 'modern interpretations'.
The liturgy is not merely a set of words and symbols. In the Liturgy, Christians unite and engage deeply and substantially with God in ways that cannot be described here, but which are revealed to Christians as they immerse themselves ever deeper in the life of the Church.
